Sculpture that projects in varying degrees from a two-dimensional background. Alto-relievo (High Relief) approaches three dimensions. Bas-relief (Low Relief) is sometimes more akin to two-dimensional drawing. Today, they are often combined in a single work, sometimes sliding between the two in a single figure. Some of the finest examples of relief sculpture were executed in conjunction with architectural programs. In modern art, relief is often used for abstract compositions emphasizing spatial recession and contrasts of light and shade.
