How It's Made

After the initial concept is developed, technical scale drawings are produced. The drawings are then blown up to full scale. From the drawings, an original pattern is produced. Typically, we use high density foam, which is carved just like wood. Certain projects demand more detail, and clay is used instead of foam, or on top of the foam. The pattern is then either coated with a finish (for interior or temporary uses) - or - a mold is taken from the pattern. Once we have a mold, we can make castings in a variety of materials - from plaster to bronze, depending on budget and needs. Castings can be finished in a variety of ways - from patinas to paint. For us, how things are made is as much a part of the creative process as what we are making. We like to engage clients in the process as much as possible - clients often visit and collaborate with us as critical decisions are being made. Our objective is always to deliver more than the client anticipates.
